ok seriously. They had an option to go with a Gibson story line and they went with evil dog? Am i the only one that finds something really wrong with that?
Hollywood politics. They had a script from Gibson, but couldn't get Michael Biehn, Carrie Henn, and until she realised she'd been typecast Sigourney Weaver had opted out The movie languished in production hell for about half a decade at 20th Century Fox's expense. What made it to the theatres was what the producers just wanted out before they'd haemorraged any more money on that thing. Yes they could have given up on it, but giving David Fincher $10 and a dog got them some money back.
Bear in mind William Gibson wrote the screenplay for Johnny Mnemonic and loved the movie. I understand his X-Files episode was poorly received, too. A great authour does not a great screenwriter make.
